How to detect and seal air leaks in ducts

An unresolved leak in a duct doesn't just compromise comfort: it increases energy consumption and accelerates system deterioration. Detecting it early and sealing it properly makes all the difference.

For a maintenance technician, an air leak in HVAC ducting is one of those problems that is rarely detected at first glance but has a very real cumulative impact.

The system continues running, but less and less efficiently: pressure drops, airflow no longer reaches where it should, and the equipment has to work harder to compensate. The result is a gradual increase in energy consumption, directly leading to higher operating costs and accelerated wear on components.

Before sealing the leak, it is important to correctly locate its source. The most common areas include duct joints, bends and branches, as well as connections to air handling units. 

Some signs that may alert technicians include air leakage noises along the duct route, temperature differences between areas that should be balanced, or pressure readings below expected values within the system.

In accessible installations, placing a hand near joints or using a smoke detector or smoke pencil can help confirm the exact leak location before intervention.
